Glasgow is fun

Taking the opportunity to spend the Easter holidays in Scotland, specifically in Glasgow, I have decided to introduce you this cool city.

I arrived
in Glasgow for the first time on 14th January 2005. I only learned about this city two months before my departure! It only happened because an accidental acquaintance answered my question; “Where can I go to find work in Europe?” with "My brother is in Glasgow, Scotland and I will join him soon. This is a cool city and if you know English you will get a job there easily”.

“I am going there" I said.

Anyway, let’s get back to 14th January 2005. It was a windy Scottish winter without snow or frost, but with a cold determined wind. After a journey of over eight hours by bus from London to Glasgow I got off at Buchannan Bus Station. It was a Saturday night and the city was partying. I went outside the station and I could not believe what I saw; girls were wearing miniskirts without tights, or short dresses with their boobies out! I just thought: 'Wow, they mustn't feel the cold!' This was my first experience of a Scottish, also British, night out which I will never forget (not only due to the above reasons).

My entire stay in Glasgow was special. It was my first experience of British culture, a completely different world, new to me. The people were lovely and most importantly lots of fun! Glasgow is fun; its people are fun; the accent is... well, fun to me! Though sometimes I do not understand all of them - for example a Glasgow bus driver - it's not a big deal because non-verbal communication is... fun. Nae bother*.

At the beginning I lived in Govan,
a place that is far from the city center and considered to be dangerous. The last subway to get there was about 23:45 then I had to walk 15 minutes next to a park of decent size, which was nice during the day but not very much at night. There were chavs meeting for their regular sessions of drinking, smoking and whatever else. The chavs* in Scotland are named - by a name elegant-sounding to me - NEDs* (see below the explanation of this abbrevation). I dared to do this walk three times in my life. Once I walked holding the neck of the wine bottle hidden in my bag so that I could break it on the above-mentioned NEDs, luckily I did not need to do so because it would have ended badly... but not for the bottle, or for the NEDs.

After a stressful li
fe in Govan I decided to spoil myself and moved to an apartment in the West End – a mostly student area - known from the very beautiful park (with squirrels, not NEDs for a change), the university and all of its cool atmosphere. The short distance from the West End to the city centre allowed me to indulge in Glasgow's night life regularly. I spent most nights dancing in clubs such as The Arches, The Tunnel, Riverside Club and others whose names I do not remember, but I will not forget that I had great times there.

However nothing beats Polo. Polo is gay club, but everyone is welcomed there. Nowhere else I felt such positive energy as in there. People are smiling, they are relaxed or laid back - you name it - but without rudeness, unnecessary showing off and snobbery. You overdress and feel stupid, because you stand out from the crowd? Not in Polo. You will hear the compliments about how great you look. Coming right after work in jeans and a sweatshirt? Great! No one will even notice. At the end of the day clothes do not make the man. The main thing is to have fun. Polo is a must point during my short stays in Glasgow twice a year when I visit my friends. I would like to add though that Polo is a club with popular commercial music, for more creative type of vibes I would refer you to the clubs mentioned before in this text.

I would like to point out that Glasgow is not just clubs and nightlife entertainment though. It also
has beautiful parks such as Pollok Country Park, Queen's Park and Kelvingrove Park (as mentioned above in the West End). It has architecture such as Glasgow Cathedral and my favorite place - the scenic Necropolis – a Victorian Cemetery Garden. I can not skip the beautiful museums in Pollok Country Park and Kelvingrove Art Gallery.

The great thing is
also that Glasgow is only (attention!) around an hour's journey by train or bus from the outstanding capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. So for those who are not fans of nightclubs in Glasgow can go for an intellectual nourishment in Edinburgh. Glasgow is fun.

Wróćmy jednak do 14go stycznia 2005. Były to moje pierwsze doświadczenia z brytyjską kulturą.

Polo jest bezdyskusyjnie "stałym punktem programu", podczas moich krótkich pobytów w Glasgow dwa razy do roku, kiedy to odwiedzam moich przyjaciół.

Glasgow is fun.
